My Motto

The famous artist Mark Rothko once said: “Pictures Must Be Miraculous.” I agree! I have always wanted my art – pictures, music, and poetry – to be like that. Expanding this idea even more, I want my art to be like a mysterious adventure challenging people emotionally and intellectually for a long time. The goal is not to reveal everything at once or easily. I have succeeded if anyone who enjoys my art achieves this impact.

The First Steps

I have long held a profound interest in photography, filmmaking, and various forms of visual art. My photography journey started in the 1980s with several analog cameras. I also acquired skills in black-and-white printing within a darkroom setting. After all these years, I retain vivid memories of that poetic and almost magical experience of witnessing an image emerge in chemicals for the first time. However, this passion can be traced back to an even earlier period.

The Genetics of Creativity

Throughout my childhood, I frequently accompanied my brother on his film and photography ventures. Additionally, after her career as an acrobat, my mother shifted her focus to sculpting and writing poetry. This indicates that creative pursuits are a family tradition. I firmly believe my artistic path was already unfolding, waiting for me to discover it.

The First Exhibition and Other Dimensions

In 1988, we came together as a family to showcase our work in Finland for the first time: a collection of sculptures by my mother alongside fine art photographs taken by my brother. I created the experimental soundscape and music for that exhibition; it was an intriguing artistic collaboration! However, following this event, I began to sense that my inner creative voice sought new challenges beyond music alone, compelling me to explore different artistic dimensions.

The Language of Film

I became more interested in light and shadows, the contrast, dialogue, emotions, and drama between them. So, the natural next step was getting into the language of film. And as always, you can get the best lessons from true masters. Later in the 1990s, I studied films by Andrei Tarkovsky. I was trying to understand his special visual language, aesthetic approach, and philosophy behind the scenes. His movies have always influenced me, deep thoughts about life, emotions, light, colors, and the art of filmmaking, but especially one of his masterpieces, “Nostalghia,” which influenced me on every artistic level.

I still remember the first time I watched the film. I could not believe how somebody created, painted, and transferred my soulscape into a motion picture. The film included the elements I was fascinated by: Italy, poetry, music, art, nature, beauty, drama, and the joy of life. It inspired me to write new music; this time, it was an emotional solo cello composition (Nostalghia) for my next concert in St. Petersburg (1992).

The Digital Era

Having worked with computers since 1986 on various music and audio projects, it felt natural for me to explore digital mediums in other areas as well. However, I began to take visual arts more seriously when the digital era rapidly advanced in the 1990s. Combining various elements to create something new was a fascinating new world. I started to study all digital tools, software, and techniques that could help me accomplish these goals and find my style of visual art.

The Second Award, Evolving and the Art Prints

In 2001, I received my second award when I attended the INNOSUOMI competition in Finland. I was awarded the third prize for my innovative multimedia project, “Verla,” which included old photographs and films, panoramas, graphics, audio material, and music. Since then, I have been developing and expanding my visual language, palette, and techniques to create art.
